elaborately carved on both sides, the front depicting a lively, festive birthday celebration for the famous Tang dynasty general Guo Ziyi, who is seated on a raised dais in the central pavilion, the focus of attention as guests and attendants converge bearing gifts amidst a lavish setting of buildings, gardens and cavorting deer, a lengthy dedicatory inscription in one upper corner and surrounded by a band displaying the 'hundred antique' motif, enclosed by a border of shou characters flanked by stylized dragons, the reverse with a lush variety of flowering plants and trees, including peony, magnolia, narcissus and roses (12)

The screen with areas of loss and wear to the lacquer and pigment, particularly around the edges and hinges. There are also numerous areas where the lacquer and pigments have been extensively consolidated and restored.
