Condition

The sculpture has extensive erosion and splitting, more pronounced on the back than the front, and there are numerous small bore holes. The tips of the crown and chignon are worn.

The facial features, crown and necklace relate the present lot to a late Yuan / Early Ming dynasty figure of Puxian bodhisattva in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, illustrated in Rene-Yvon Lefebvre d'Argence (ed.), Chinese, Korean and Japanese Sculpture in The Avery Brundage Collection, Tokyo, 1974, no. 149. Two other related figures of the same date were sold in our rooms, one in London, 6th December 1994, lot 12, and the other in these rooms, 23rd September 1997, lot 172. A  similar bust was sold at Christie's London, 1st December 1997, lot 105.
