boldly carved with a deep rounded body rising to a narrow rounded shoulder and a galleried rim, all supported on three animal mask legs, the sides finely carved in low relief with two large archaistic taotie masks interrupted by raised vertical flanges, further interrupted by smaller taotie masks and a pair of phoenix loop handles suspending loose rings, the domed cover similarly encircled by taotie masks and raised flanges, surmounted by a curled dragon finial, the stone of a dark green colour with lighter veining and black flecks

The overall condition is quite good with a network of filled-in cracks developed from the natural veins, especially to the base (probably slightly polished) and the right ring of the incense burner. The rim of the cover also has a 0.4 x 2 cm restuck chip. There are also some typical minute bruises and nicks to the extremities, including the tips of the beaks and wings of the phoenix. The catalogue illustration is slightly tinted with yellow.
