This vase is particularly notable for the velvety-rich tone of the rich teadust glaze. For other vases of this type, see one in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated by Rose Kerr, Chinese Ceramics. Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, London, 1986, pl. 25; one published in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 2, London, 1994, pl. 936; and two vases sold in these rooms, one from the T.Y. Chao collection, 19th May 1987, lot 294, and the other from the Hall family collection, 2nd May 2000, lot 570.
Opaque glazes that evoke the green patina of metalwork were produced since the Tang and Song dynasties, and the teadust glaze, made through the precipitation of yellow crystal that stands out against a dark green background producing what is known in Japanese as chayemo or ‘tea-leaf dust’ glaze effect, was first used at Jingdezhen during the 18th century, under the strict supervision of Tang Ying, Superintendent of the Imperial kilns during the Yongzheng (1722-1735) and Qianlong reigns. Compare a smaller Yongzheng prototype of this vase, sold at Christie’s London, 15th May 2007, lot 251.
