each of oval section, the sides divided into eight lobes, delicately painted to the top of each lobe with a floral bloom picked out in various shades of yellow, blue, pink, green and white enamels, all encircling a stylised eight-petalled pink flowerhead with blue scrollwork, demi florets and pointed green leaves radiating from the furrows between the lobes, the rim encircled by a lime-green trefoil border, all reserved on a pale aubergine ground, the box similarly decorated with four leafy lotus sprays against a lemon-yellow ground, enclosing a four-character reign mark within a double-square, the interior enamelled in mottled sky-blue and the rims mounted in gilt

Both boxes are in overall good condition, and the enamels are well preserved. There is typical minor crazing to areas of the enamels on both boxes, as expected of the period, and other minor surface wear. There is rubbing to the gilding at the rims of both boxes and covers. Left box: There are shallow enamel flakes at the lobes of the cover (largest 0.5cm ). Right box: As discernible in the catalogue photograph, there is minor enamel shrinkage at the cover, including a shallow 2cm firing flaw with resulting enamel flake There is slightly too much of a red tinge to the color of the boxes in the catalogue photos.

同品類畫琺瑯盒，為十七世紀末西風東漸之產物；亦為清宮御用琺瑯作妙手天工之代表。此類盒始於康熙，至乾隆一朝，除款識外，均仍承舊制。高宗好品尚珍，更善變古通今，然對此類盒卻全無添改之意，足可見其備具不逝之美韻。可參考一相類盒例，清宮舊藏，現存北京，錄於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集：金屬胎琺瑯器》，香港，2002年，圖版209。同見其康朝原型，圖版183。另見一對，售於倫敦蘇富比1977年7月5日，編號43。再見一例，售於倫敦佳士得1992年6月8日，編號195。

清廷1684年，開放海禁，銅胎畫琺瑯之技藝隨法國傳教士傳入廣州。廣州藝匠借近港之便，率先掌握其工藝。此舶來器之精工巧製，尊貴華富，深得康熙帝垂愛，遂諭招廣匠及歐洲教士入朝，以精御用琺瑯作之工。
