Condition
The overall condition of the vase is quite good. There is an approximately 0.8 cm. chip to the ear of the large chilong. The cover has a minor nick to the end of the lion's tail. The actual colour is a tinge greyer than the catalogue illustration.

This elegant vase displays the skill of the craftsman in his ability to fashion the stone successfully in both low and high relief. The naturalistic rendering of the phoenix, evident in the finely detailed feathers, contrasts with the bold carving of the two chilong on the reverse, which are modelled in the round and capture a sense of movement and dynamism suited to the subject. Compare a jade vase with the design of two chilong on one side and a bird on the other, similarly rendered in high and low relief, sold in our New York rooms 28thMay 1991, lot 21.
It is more common to find jade vases modelled only with chilong; see three examples sold in our New York rooms, one, 29th September 1989, lot 538, the second, 3rd June 1992, lot 49, and the third, 24th March 1998, lot 347.
