The overall condition is very good and the surface is very well maintained. The colour is very slightly darker than the catalogue illustration.

此黃玉馬玉質溫潤如脂，圓雕工藝簡潔流暢，打磨均勻細膩。工匠以精湛巧妙的技法，雕琢出自然逼真的臥馬。馬被賦以權力和財富的像徵，工匠以嫻熟的技法雕琢臥馬，並從獨特的臥姿中體現了馬與生俱來的力量，可謂匠心獨運。如此小型的玉雕，工匠會因材施藝，用盡玉料隨形圓雕坐姿或臥造型的動物，既可把玩，亦可置於書案，用作鎮紙。

葉義醫生藏一件類似的玉馬，曾展於《中國玉雕》，香港藝術館，香港，1983年，編號163；兩件明朝的臥馬於倫敦蘇富比拍賣，一件1994年6月7日，編號104；另一件為阿靈頓伯爵（Lord Arlington）舊藏，1993年11月29日，編號30。

可作比較同年份的一件臥馬，原為水松石山房之舊藏，曾展於《文玩萃珍》，香港大學馮平山博物館，香港，1986年，編號55，並先後兩次於香港蘇富比拍賣，1981年5月20日，編號886；2013年4月8日，編號133。另一件為英國劍橋菲茨威廉博物館館藏，著錄於林政昇主編《The Immortal Stone》 ，倫敦，2009年， 圖47。
