The box and cover are in good condition with the exception of some light re-touching to the red lacquer, in particular to the edges and corners, a hairline age crack to one corner of the cover, light scratches and rubbing to the black lacquer base.

乾隆帝喜標新創異，或因而篤使藝匠窮工極變，創製各樣新穎精品，以瓷器模仿石、銅、漆等器 ，彰顯驚人技藝。本品則以雕漆模仿線裝古籍。盒身骨雕模仿書籍書口紋理，雕工精細，巧奪天工，書面飾團花紋則類紡織品設計。類近一例，圖見《故宮博物院藏雕漆》，北京，1985年，圖版395；天津博物館藏有一例，錄於《中國漆器全集 》，第六冊，福州，1993，圖版221；另一作例售於香港佳士得2003年10月27日，編號784。尚有一例，圖錄於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集·清代漆器》，故宮博物院，香港，2006年，圖版52。

除雕漆外，尚有以各種素材作例，模仿線裝古籍造型製器；銅胎掐絲琺瑯三層蓋盒兩例，先後售於香港佳士得2005年11月28日，編號1500及2010年12月1日，編號3180A，後者出自私人收藏，收藏家於1942-1967年曾擔任溥儀的私人醫生；兩件木雕作例，售於紐約佳士得2011年9月15日，編號1279；上海博物館藏有一瓷盒作例，圖見《中國陶瓷全集·清》，卷15，上海，2000年，圖版51。

盒身皮球團花紋形態獨特，如此抽象圖案同例極罕，或可溯源至日本家族徽章。傳雍正及乾隆帝對日本工藝極感興趣，嘗命御作工匠以各樣素材複製。參見一類近作例，屬乾隆年器並款，為台北國立故宮博物院館藏，見該博物院《華麗彩瓷：乾隆洋彩》圖錄，台北，2008，圖版76。
