Clementine enthusiastically supported a joint venture between the Red Cross and Order of St John for aid to Russia and in 1941 became Chairwoman of the appeal committee, it became colloquially known as 'Mrs Churchill's Aid to Russia Fund'.

By 1945 the fund had collected £6,700,000 and Clementine in the spring of that year visited Russia on an extensive tour. It culminated in her being decorated by the Soviet Government with the 'Red Banner of Labour'.
