一九八四年，王無邪移居美國明尼蘇達州，隨即受到當地乃至美國西部的景色啟發，幾年間共創作了九幅關於黃石國家公園的作品。最初他隨北宋山水畫的乾筆皴染，卻發現以此筆法表達北美的植被與山石並非易事。其後作品中的用筆越發乾燥、放任隨意，與傳統技法已頗為不同，《黃石飛瀑》用色飽滿，結構完善，與藝術家早期單色系的傳統鳥瞰式構圖山水畫截然不同，極為突出。
