余承堯是一位自學成才的藝術家，一九四九年隨船抵達台灣，其作畫手法獨出心裁，在當時前所未見。王己千曾在一九六〇年代對藝術史學家徐小虎（Joan Stanley Baker）說道：「余老先生是位不尋常的畫家。他沒接受過訓練，但他對佈局的直覺卻是一流的。他沒有可稱道的筆法，但他的畫卻十分雄偉壯麗，我認識許多過去的、現代的藝術家，他們受過很好訓練，筆法也遠勝過他；但是我從沒見過一個人能畫得像余承堯那樣。他的畫確實令人驚嘆… 」（《今日台灣》，一九八六年三月一日）
