包豪斯建築師出身的陳其寬將自己的藝術願景與對大自然的獨特視角相結合，作品中關注當下此刻並由此創新。 他無疑深受同期畫家余承堯（1898-1993年）的啟發，余氏自學成才，其繪畫特點是自由不羈的特有筆法與絢麗繽紛的色彩。兩人都對設計和結構有著深刻的認知，打破傳統繪畫模式的束縛，對色彩與光影的處理恰到好處，筆墨運用成熟，作品引人入勝。
《古木》向日本屋久杉林的千年古樹致敬，此神木林在數百年來一直是旅者參拜之地。中國早在公元六世紀便有記載，屋久島上茂盛的森林中棲息著當地特有的獼猴和梅花鹿。手卷作品平易近人，引領觀者走進生機勃勃的畫面，幾十隻獼猴穿梭林間，梅花鹿玩耍嬉戲，熱鬧非凡。構圖經深思熟慮，落筆也極為細膩，與之形成強烈對比的是幾乎佈滿整幅畫面的奇特海綿狀樹木和錯雜斷續的樹枝，好像一個異想天開的怪誕世界，迎面撲來。畫面的典雅構圖流露出森林的盎然生氣，無論老少，所有觀者都可沉浸其中，盡情享受。
