呂壽琨被廣泛認同為香港最重要的藝術家之一，亦是香港「新水墨運動」的發起人。呂壽琨曾於一九六〇年代擔任香港藝術觀的榮譽顧問及於香港中文大學教授水墨畫創作。
在其作品《程》中，呂壽琨透過大膽俐落的寬闊水墨筆觸來表現山水，而在其較早期的作品《仿髡殘山水圖》（一九五五年作）（拍品編號 2839）中，他則以濃密紋理來描繪自然意象景觀，兩者間的對比影現了呂壽琨的多才多藝。呂氏曾執教鞭，一生致力於發掘並學習新的藝術表達形式。他在繪畫上下不斷探索，最終發展成成熟的「神」系列。此系列具標誌性的特色是周圍環繞着現代派淋漓暢快的粗獷線條的、鮮明的紅色蓮花，每幅作品均展現其在傳統創作原則下、不斷擴闊水墨創作實驗界限的信心和決心。
