- Bamboo (Bambuseae)
imitating a rhinoceros horn libation cup, the protruding central section resting on a flared foot with a square-lipped rim and surmounted by an everted rim, carved in low relief with around the middle band with two pairs of addorsed phoenix with sinuous bodies, an 'S'-shaped handle set on one side with two high-relief chilong clambering on the handle, below four further chilong, three of them resting on the rim, the opposing side of the vessel carved in high relief with three further chilong on all fours, the bamboo of an even golden brown tone
Condition
As visible in the catalogue photo, there are natural age cracks in the texture of the bamboo. There is a tiny nick to the foot (front right in catalogue photo), but otherwise the piece is in good condition. The patina is a warmer more attractive golden-brown colour than in the catalogue photo, where it has emerged slightly too orange-brown.
