the stone carved in the form of a rectangular tile arched in the middle and slanted on the long sides, the centre carved with an oblong channel slightly squared off to one side surrounding the smooth, slightly concave grinding surface, framed by cursive and running script calligraphy by Wen Peng (1498-1573) and Wang Wenzhi (1730-1802), all above a third horizontal inscription in seal script reading Guoyunlou cang (‘Collection of Guoyunlou’), signed Yu Yue (1821-1907), the stone of dark gray tone, fitted on a later wooden stand with a drawer

Condition
As visible in the catalogue photo, there are minor bruises and losses to the edges, and minor surface wear to the top. However, the inscription is clearly legible. The colour in the catalogue photo is fairly accurate.

此硯石右方刻草書，評明朝文人周官繪畫，謂其能繪善飲，署款文彭，後有「文壽承氏」及「三橋居士」印。釋文應為：
「周官，字茂夫，善飲酒，說醉則隨意，美筆愛人，形狀無不得其神彩，不必粉黛之意態。自是當時者，張夢晉者亦能畫，飲酒向與之契合，吳人得其片楮，皆寶惜寫護，豈皆以酒而全其神，如張旭之於字學耶，偶閱茂夫此（頓？），因題其後。」
周官，約明十五至十六世紀，擅人物白描，人稱無俗韵，尤精於繪飲中八仙，《明畫錄》與《石渠寶笈》等皆有著錄。文彭（1498-1573），晚明文人，乃著名吳門畫家文徵明之長子，精書畫、擅篆刻，以篆隸二體著稱。
左方則據王文治乾隆五十七年（1792）在潘恭壽《蓮巢自吟詩意圖》冊中之題跋節錄刻文，云：「作此忽忽七年矣。頃耀卿裝池成冊。右（左）幅素紙屬余作書，余因撿舊作之與畫相關合者，錄以請正，并舉似蓮巢也。壬子正月四日文治重記」。後鐫一印，為「王文治印」。該冊乃龔氏袖海樓舊藏，曾出版於王雲五主編，《潘王合璧》，台北，1974年。王文治（1730-1802），江蘇丹徒人，乾隆二十五年（1760）探花，曾任翰林院侍讀。工詩文，善書法，又以行草為優，與劉墉（1719-1805）並稱「濃墨宰相、淡墨探花」。
硯下方有篆書「過雲樓藏」字，署款俞樾。清人俞樾（1821-1907），道光三十年（1850）進士，歷任翰林院編修、國史館協修，官至河南學政，咸豐六年（1856）被劾奏遭罷免。後於蘇州修建「曲園」，意取自《老子》之「曲則全」。晚年講學於杭州詁經精舍，弟子有章炳麟（1869-1936）、吳昌碩（1844-1927）等人。俞樾與顧文彬等墨客文士交情甚深，時有雅集。曾為顧文彬《眉綠樓詞》撰序，又書《怡園記》，詠其園林靈石奇峰、曲徑幽池。
