each of barrel shape carved in low relief with rounded bosses around the top and bottom imitating drum studs, the body carved with a continuous lush landscape with birds and flowers, one with a phoenix perched on a peony branch on one side and chrysanthemum and prunus with a pair of magpies on the reverse, the other with an egret in a lotus pond and a small monkey and a bird on a peach branch, the stone of white tone with natural veining
Condition
As visible in the catalogue photo, both stools have extensive surface wear, in keeping with their use in a domestic setting. There are also natural flaws to the stone, which have slightly expanded over time, but are stable and do not impact on the beauty of the design.
Both have bruises and losses to the base, upper rim and surface, the most significant of which is a loss of approximately 6cm to the base of the stool illustrated on the left in the catalogue photo. The colour in the photo is fairly accurate.
