隋建國的《垂死的奴隸》源自米開朗基羅的同名雕塑，原作以現實手法，表現奴隸垂死掙扎的一刻，雕像栩栩如生。隋建國借用了原作的形象，卻為奴隸換上中山裝，亦是共產黨的革命服，是對中國過去一世紀苦難的真實表現。隋建國是當代中國藝術中最重要的雕望家，他畢業於中央美術學院，九十年代開始持續發表觀念雕塑，包括國際知名的〈衣缽〉系列，此系列以中山裝本身作為一個雕塑主題，而非穿著中山裝的人，顛覆過往偶像的過份崇拜。隋建國亦曾創作針對中國商業主義的〈中國製造〉系列等，是中國極具代表性的藝術家。
