西野達雖然於一九六O年生於日本,但八十年代已前往德國深造,並一直於彼邦進行藝術活動。西野表現了一個跨地域藝術家的姿態,在他的作品中幾乎已經找不到他祖國的影響。西野以攝影作為其藝術活動的紀錄,他最為人熟識的是在世界各地的地標性建築或雕像進行介入行為,他會就地建立一個居室佈置,把地標包圍起來,並把居室開放予公眾參觀,其中最為人稱道的是紐約的著名地標Christopher Columbus、英國的維多利女皇雕像等。西野除了賦予城市另一解讀方式,居於城市的市民更可以在家居環境下,重新審視公共物件的真實性及其意義。更重要的是,西野的行為打破了公共空間與私人空間的界線,地標雕像雖然是公共財產,但卻在家居環境中出現,同時,此環境雖然有其私密性,卻原來是人工製造出來的公共空間。今次拍賣作品《魚尾獅酒店》是西野為二O一一年新加坡雙年展而創作的,西野應邀把新加坡的地標魚尾獅「放進」一間富麗堂皇的酒店房間,魚尾獅的前方是一張誘人躺下的雙人床,他表示︰「我想把新加坡幾酒店房間形式來代表這個港口城市。」西野的介入式藝術行為,把市民及城市重新連接起來,他自一九九七年開始於世界各地進行介入藝術活動,並為每次項目留下僅此一款的攝影紀錄。
