上款：「棣雲」即俞書祥（1856-1918），江蘇太倉人。早歲入上海廣方言館，習外語及自然科學，以郡試第一，補博士弟子員。一八八一年，入天津電報局工作，曾任督造各省電綫工程指揮。一八八七年，應台灣巡撫劉銘傳之召，赴當地開發電報事業。兩年後返滬，於電報總局工作，後籌辦上海電報學堂，並出任總辦，主持校務廿載，培養大量人才。

註：天津電報局創辦於一八八○年，便捷交通；與北洋水師等，皆李鴻章推行洋務之重要環節。俞棣雲於八一年投身天津電報局，鄧世昌則於八○年調任北洋水師，雖非服役於同一機構，惟事業皆涉洋務，同屬維新之一員；且一八八八年，鄧世昌赴台灣助剿蕃人，時俞氏亦在當地開發電報事業，或因此時局際遇而有過從。

本幅無年款，上鈐「北洋水師中人」章，故應寫於一八八○年或其後。
