註:一九三八年正值抗日戰爭全面爆發,滬、寧相繼淪陷;南京大屠殺持續數月;徐州、武漢會戰接連失利,國人痛心無措。徐悲鴻是年所作多抒發對國難之憂心,〈負傷之獅〉、〈側目〉等題材最有寄意,自畫像則作仰天長嘆狀,題「遙看群動息,伫立待奔雷」 以寄託心境。本幅借張鶴野題石濤畫作之詩句,點明旨意,畫家誤為清湘自撰,「破碎」為原詩「零碎」之誤,卻更具悲憤噴薄之力;詩典出唐高蟾〈金陵晚望〉:「曾伴浮雲歸晚翠,猶陪落日泛秋聲。世間無限丹青手,一片傷心畫不成。」改「畫不成」為「畫」,國家危難下,身為畫家,惟以一紙丹青,藉筆墨以作「匕首投槍」之用,激勵國民奮起驅寇,悲鴻性格中豪邁愛國一面盡現筆底!一九三五年秋,徐悲鴻與時任教中央大學的張大千同攜學生赴黃山寫生,謝稚柳同行,觀一路煙雲,盡興而歸;不復三年,悲鴻隨校內遷重慶,大千亦不任教席。是歲九月,二人重逢於桂林,暢敘別情,無奈國難之下來去匆匆,回憶昔日共游黃山佳事,盡毀於「寇雰如此」,不知何日才能故地重游,心感慨然者,又何止藝術家一人?
悲鴻山水題材數量少於動物、人物。三十年代晚期多水墨氤氳之作,以〈灕江春雨〉為代表,本幅亦此期典型面貌,且尺幅較大,與翌年春之〈羅浮山色〉尺幅相若,構圖頗類。畫中近景寫坡石雙松,遠景以幾近潑墨之筆畫得群山,一實一虛,拉開空間;古松兩株相依而生,提筆縱橫,粗幹之遒健、樹皮之滋潤,枝椏之偃仰佈勢,皆得生拙意趣;松針則先染花青,復以墨筆點出,筆筆蒼勁。遠山畫法實借鑒西方水彩,以淨墨出之,益顯中國水墨之特色,乃畫家筆下「元氣淋灕障猶濕」之表現。
〈徐悲鴻年譜長編〉「一九三八年」條記載:「(六月)收到廣州德國醫生柯道博士一函,稱德國駐廣州總領事阿登伯對徐畫備致愛慕……懇求徐氏寄八九幅至廣州,徐即托人攜畫九幅至港……德副領事康培……選購〈黃山〉……」本幅似屬當年裝裱,且具悲鴻自書簽,源出自德國收藏,與年譜提及者脗合,或為同幅,待考。
