柳莊清夏。自西湖禁遊以還，未曾畫柳，哀西子蒙不潔也。昨晤杭友，談甚快意，忽動蓴思，為寫此箑，是乃意中幻想。今之西湖，猶無是景是人也。甲申夏，似菊初先生大雅正之。鄭午昌並記於上海墨鴛鴦樓。

註 ：本幅題識中「西湖禁遊」，即指一九三七年十二月廿四日，杭州陷敵，西子蒙塵，日寇植櫻花於蘇堤上。名迹受損，故鄭午昌有「未曾畫柳，哀西子蒙不潔也」之歎。今重寫西湖垂柳，時干戈未息，只能拾掇「意中幻想」矣！
