of octagonal form, with straight sides supported on a recessed splayed foot, finely incised and gilt overall in the chinkin technique on a shu-urushi ground, the raised top of the cover with a sage seated on a rocky promontory contemplating a cliff face, an attendant standing next to him carrying a wrapped qin, all below a gnarled wutong tree, the landscape scene framed by a lattice border and surrounded by leafy peonies on the sloping sides, the exterior walls with further peonies between double-line borders, all above a band of overlapping hollyhock leaves encircling the foot, the interior and base lacquered in dark brown

The lacquer is worn and rather crackled overall as visible on the catalogue illustration, with some losses and flakes on the top. There is further touch up and old restorations, predominantly at the corners of the top and along the rims.
