of rectangular form supported on a flared base of bracket-shaped outline, finely incised and gilt overall in the chinkin technique on a shu-urushi ground, the slightly domed cover with two songbirds flying above lush peony blossoms issuing from jagged rocks, within a border of combed zig-zag repeated along the edges of the box, the sides with large chrysanthemum flowers wreathed in dense foliage, the interior of the cover picked out with stylised birds and butterflies, the splayed base detailed with detached scrolls

The gilding on the top is slightly faded but very fresh on the sides. There are a few very minor occasional dents to the rims with light touch up to the interior rim, but overall the box is in very good condition.
