of octagonal form and three-tiered section, with straight sides supported on a recessed splayed foot, finely incised and gilt overall in the chinkin technique on a shu-urushi ground, the raised cover with a branch of chrysanthemum within a border of combed waves and peonies on the sloping sides, the exterior walls with further peonies wreathed in scrolling leaves between double-line borders, all above a band of overlapping hollyhock leaves encircling the foot, the interior and base lacquered in dark brown, the rims gilt

The lacquer is crackled and slightly lifting in the centre on the top, the gilding is rubbed in areas but overall the lacquer box is in very good condition.
