of octagonal form with flared sides, supported on a shaped base and eight corner feet finely outlined with a small rounded lip, brightly decorated in carved and painted brown lacquer, applied in relief on the cinnabar ground and picked out in silver, the interior with an aged gnarled tree, growing next to jagged rocks and bamboo sprays, the cavetto with red-petalled flower sprays enclosed within recessed gold cartouches and reserved on a diaper ground, all within raised borders outlining the centre and the rim, the underside lacquered in red, the base lacquered in black

The tray is generally in good condition and beautifully preserved with some expected relacquering to the red ground on the underside and to the base. The carved decoration is also in good condition. There are a couple of vertical scratches to the right of the tree measuring approximately 5 and 8 cm as well as further light scratches around the branches of the tree. The gilding around the cavetto is slightly rubbed or worn in areas, with commensuration with the age of the tray. The actual colour is a fraction brighter, more orangey and vivid compared to the catalogue illustration.
