of rectangular form with straight sides and rounded corners, set in front with a brass lock plate, a ruyi-shaped clasp, and bail handles on the sides, finely decorated overall in red, green and brown lacquer on a black ground, the front with three large Ming-style lotus heads wreathed in foliate scrolls, the domed hinged cover, sides and reverse similarly decorated with large lotus heads, the base lacquered in black and the interior in red

The box is in overall very good condition and the polychrome lacquer is well preserved with only expected tarnishing consistent with age. There is some re-lacquering along the corner edges and stabilization to the lacquer on interior rim.
