of rectangular form, with slightly tapering sides supported on a flat base, set with a flanged rim, finely inlaid around the sides in the raden technique on a black lacquer ground with a variety of auspicious items, flowers and marine life, including conch shells and floating seaweed, chrysanthemum blossoms, beribboned fan, drum clappers, 'flaming pearl', magnolia or butterfly, the base and the interior left plain, the latter set with a yellow silk lining
Condition
There is brown re-lacquering along the slightly rounded bottom edges of the box and on the corners of the box (showing on the catalogue illustration) with some replacements of mother-of-pearl inlays, there are crackles to the lacquer that have been stabilised, the gilding on the flanged tim is rubbed.
