of cylindrical section, the handle lacquered in black and painted with a continuous scene depicting a seated scholar being flanked by a lady and an assistant on each side, a further gentleman presenting a scroll to the seated gentleman in the foreground, all below a rectangular cartouche enclosing a six-character reign mark, the cover similarly lacquered in black and painted with a scholar sitting behind a desk with an opened scroll in a rural setting, two further scholars standing adjacent to the desk

There is some expected surface wear or tarnishing to the lacquer in areas, with some small losses to the mother-of-pearl inlays or occasional dents on the black ground. There are some tiny losses of lacquer around the joint of the handle and around the horn ring encircling the rim of the cover. The mother-of-pearl border framing the mark is slightly stained to pink as visible on the photo. There is some rubbing to the gilding on the extremities, but overall the lacquer brush is in good condition, in commensuration with its age and the fragility of the material. The actual colour is somewhat deeper and more contrasted compared to the catalogue illustration.
