the ascetic figure finely carved seated with his left knee raised and his right leg crossing underneath, dressed in a long monastic robe falling down from his shoulders revealing his emaciated torso and draping in undulous folds on the underside, resting his tonsured head on his left hand, his face lively detailed with a broad nose, hooded eyes framed by long pendulous earlobes and a stippled beard, all set in a melancholic expression, the hem of the robe finely incised with floral scrolls, the wood richly patinated to a warm reddish-brown colour, on a fitted carved wood stand

There are a few old chips to the edge of the base of the sculpture, including a 2 cm. section to the bottom right that has been re-carved as the hem of the robe, and a 1.5 cm. re-carved chip in front of his right bare foot, and another polished shallow chip, approx 3 cm, to the hem of the robe below his left elbow. There is an age crackle extending from the bottom of the figure on the reverse up the back on approx. 4 cm. Otherwise the carving is in good condition with a fine patina. The wood stand appears to be old with a few age cracks extending from the edge of the rim and on the underside.
