of compressed globular form raised on three cabriole legs issuing from lion masks, flanked by two horned mythical-beast handles suspending loose rings, the bombé sides unusually carved with figural scenes depicting a man holding a fly whisk and trailing an ox, either meeting with an immortal standing on cloud billows on one side, or adressing a boy on the other, all divided diagonally by an incised brown vein cleverly worked in relief to form the horizon line, the cover similarly decorated with birds and lingzhi below an openwork knob in the form of two lions, the smoothly polished stone of buff-celadon colour, wood stand

Condition

The end section (approx. 2 cm) of the bushy tail of one of the two cubs on the cover knob has been broken and re-affixed. There are some minor nibbling along the edges of the carving but overall the censer is in good condition.
