of cylindrical form with a flared rim, fitting on a base of corresponding form, the exterior meticulously carved with a continuous scene depicting sages in a bamboo grove, an attendant fanning charcoals underside a kettle the reverse carved in relief with a two-column inscription

The base of the brushpot is missing. It is now set on a later hardwood stand as visible on the catalogue illustration. There are some age cracks running vertically from the outer mouthrim and some nicks consistent with age. There are some old dents and wear to the interior rim, together with old traces of ink. Interestingly two out of three of the seals panels flanking the inscription in relief on the reverse are left uncarved as if the brushpot had yet to be completed or signed. The actual colour is consistent, if not slightly less red compared to the catalogue illustration.
