一九四九年出生於台北的劉墉集作家、學者及畫家於一身，喜愛自稱是精通生活之術的當代文人。劉墉的作品深深植根於傳統文化，其水墨作品探討不同主題，從靜物畫中一絲不苟的寫實畫風，到風景畫中的現代抽象主義，可謂應有盡有。
北宋著名詩人蘇軾評價初唐王維作品時曾曰：「味摩诘之詩，詩中有畫；觀摩詰之畫，畫中有詩」。劉墉的畫作中不乏異曲同工之妙，他的工筆畫栩栩如生，散發一種詩意的理想主義情結。《青鳥曼陀羅》(拍品編號49) 一作中，鳥兒在空中展翅翱翔，循著牽牛花的芬芳翩翩而去。劉墉的畫作與其關於藝術文化方面的文章類似，尖銳現實，卻又情深意長，充滿對生命的深刻理解。
劉墉對鳥類學與植物學造詣頗深，也許正因此造就其一絲不苟、細緻入微的工筆花鳥畫，令人印象深刻，稱其為「技術文人」並不為過。劉墉作畫時，首先在絹正面勾勒出大致輪廓，把絹反過來，先上膠礬，再平塗胡粉。再以白色暈染出陰陽向背，共三次。把絹返回正面，染綠到黃綠，並以白粉再強調最白的地方。
