劉國松於一九四九年後活躍於台灣藝壇,被譽為最為傑出的畫家,善於結合西方現代繪畫以及中國傳統藝術中的抽象元素。一九五六年,他與一群志同道合的藝術家在台灣創立五月畫會,運用水墨媒介促進中國畫現代化運動。「現代中國水墨畫」一詞來自劉國松在六十年代於台灣發佈的文章及展覽活動。他深受抽象表現主義啟發,並以傳統中國文人畫中的相似元素融會貫通,透過自由即興的創作形式展現他的藝術特質。劉國松精通色彩運用,對畫紙紋理掌握自如,與傳統畫派及其水墨藝術同儕截然不同。他對紙張拼貼、大理石墨紋以及鮮艷色彩的探索,使他成就出革新的創作風格,如實展現出有別於西方藝術的當代文人精神。
本幅作品《水墨雪景》(拍品編號47) 來自堪薩斯藝術學院一位教授之收藏,是劉國松曾於美國展出的早期作品之一。一九六六至一九六七年間,劉國松獲得約翰‧D‧洛克菲勒二世基金資助,經常到訪歐美各地。其最早期的海外展覽,包括於一九六七年在堪薩斯城密蘇里州納爾遜藝術博物館舉辦的個展,其以廣泛的亞洲藝術品收藏而聞名。有別於藝術家完全抽象的特色著作,此山水畫作以藝術家自製的紙張拼貼、大理石墨紋以及「抽筋剝皮皴」技巧,描繪峴出山石峭壁、稀鬆林木於蒼茫白雪若隱若現的景色。此作巧以傳統上的「留白」方式,在畫中的前後背景保留紙本原色,並配上創新的拼貼手法加入點綴,使構圖完備。另一方面,藝術家未有於畫上留有太多細節元素,推翻了傳統上重視對自然景象的細緻描寫,並成為劉國松強而有力的藝術視野。
