荷花是中國文人畫的一個創作母題。縱觀畫史上善畫荷花者，不乏大家，尤明清兩朝為最。恃才狂傲的徐文長，或明宗室后裔的八大、清湘老人畫荷，或野逸、或冷峻、或清傲。至民國有大千居士為繼，有形成獨家樣貌。
黃永玉自號萬荷堂主人被稱為「荷痴」其筆下的荷花，自有家法，無脈可尋。前人寫荷，多孤傲自賞，逸筆草草，有不食人間煙火之逸氣。黃氏畫荷給觀者帶來一種絢麗卻不艷俗的美感。
《荷花》(拍品編號46) 為黃永玉於家鄉湘西鳳凰所做。荷葉被概括的形式化，刷掃而就，荷花勾畫點染，花姿倔強俏皮，生動華貴。黃永玉的題畫跋經常為人意外，與其睿智風趣的性格一樣，令人意外又讀后意味深長，此幅以湘西土家童謠為跋，意趣可人又點畫題。
