一想到宋琨作品中一向流露出的「隱者不遇」，遁於內心的現實疏離感，腦海裏便會勾畫出《蜀道男》（拍品編號4）的這一幅景象——旅途中車窗邊睡著的疲憊男人。這一件最能精準詮釋宋琨繪畫意象的作品，出自她二OO九年的個展「尋隱者不遇」。「歸途」不僅僅是這件作品所呈現出的敘事，更是貫穿著宋琨這一時期的內涵指引。無論是紐約街頭喝酒的愛爾蘭女人；迷茫於虛幻都市的青年；還是被滌祛生機的故鄉景觀，宋琨始終在針對人作為個體存在與歸宿的問題進行深入地探討。
皮力總結這時期宋琨創作道：「畫面凝固，晦暗，靜謐，看似時空交錯，人物種族、身份、性別不同，但都體現藝術家本人作為個體自我內部的審視與變革。潛意識的探尋與俗世的現實生活相遇，就有了豐富而複雜的內容，這也恰恰造就了她作品裏特有的詩意與張力。從她的意識流式的敘事風格的作品當中，我們可以洞察到她對盲目資本主義異化的反感和她對中國傳統和本土文化的敬仰。」1
