of cylindrical form, the exterior lacquered in brownish-black and gilt in qiangjin technique against a groundwork of interlocking circles, the slightly convex cover centred on a peony blossom surrounded by leafy sprigs of peony blooms of varying sizes and a key-fret border, the straight sides of the cover intricately accented with leafy scrolls bearing peony blooms, the box similarly detailed with large blossoming peonies intertwined with leaves, set on the sides with a pair of bronze ringlets with a flower-shaped base, the interior set with a detachable circular tray, the interior and tray lacquered red, the base lacquered black

Condition
There are age cracks and minor losses to detail on both the box and cover. Flaking to lacquer.
Cover: retouching to small areas on the top. Traces of original gold lacquer
Box: small chips to the extremities, particularly the flanges of the box. Aggravated age cracks, with exposed crack of 7cm on the underside. Possible re-lacquering in antiquity.
