Condition
Please note that the painting is painted on paper and not on silk.
The painting was mounted as a scroll and is now framed. It is not laid onto a board but loose behind the glass. The painting is in overall good condition. There are two vertical tears, one ca. 10cm long, to the mount and painting to the centre of the upper edge of the painting (one visible in the catalogue illustration). There are several horizontal creases across the painting and several vertical splits. There is a ca. 6cm long horizontal tear to the centre of the left edge running through the mount and the paper. The colours are vibrant and fresh.

The present painting may have been painted to commemorate the sitter's birthday. The informal setting in a garden landscape includes objects that appear casually placed around her but that have a highly symbolic meaning. The lady is seated beneath a pine tree and the clusters of pine cones scattered at her feet allude to ther numerous offspring. Used in conjunction with the flowering prunus it suggests a life borne through the seasons. The shou characters that embellish her bright blue robe relay to the long life she has led and for the wish for further years to come.
The formal style of the setting and her frontal posture contrast with the individualised features of the lady suggesting that the painting was in fact a portrait of a specific person. Stylistically it relates to a group of paintings in the Palace museum collection that are considered portraits of members of the Imperial family. Like the lady in the present painting, these paintings depict their sitters in a very similar informal garden setting featuring elements that also appear in the present painting, the sitter seated on a small cushion on a rock and even wearing a robe with similar detailed decoration, compare Qingdai di hou xiang, Beijing, 1998. The similarity of these paintings suggests that the present piece may have belonged to the group of Imperial portraits and could depict one of the sitters at a later stage in life.
