Condition
The boulder is in overall very good condition. It is crisply carved, with great attention to the figure's face and dress. There are very tiny fritts to some of the edges and raised parts of the carving. The stone is of a darker, more celadon colour than the catalogue illustration suggests and polished to a soft glow. The paper label reading 'P49' on the base of the boulder has partially come off but is there.

本品帶「第七嘎納嘎巴薩尊者」及「戊寅」（即乾隆年間，公元1758年）款識，刻文「敷席坐石。不蹙以嚬。亭亭竹杖。却具三身。日面月面。一吸一呼。了本性空不離幻軀。」乃乾隆皇帝御作《丁觀鵬摹貫休十六應真像贊》，文錄於《御製文集》《初集》，見《四庫全書》，卷29:6b。
《御製文集》《初集》，卷28:12a-12b記載，朝廷畫師丁觀鵬奉乾隆帝御令，按貫休禪師十六羅漢造型繪製畫像，弘曆御文詠贊，本山子背面刻文贊第七尊者嘎納嘎巴薩。
本品似出自成組十六件山子，製於丁觀鵬奉敕繪製十六應真像之後。嘎納嘎巴薩亦作迦諾迦伐蹉，刻文所述「三身」乃指法、報、應三身；法身，為證顯實相真如之理體，無二無別，常住湛然。報身，酬報因行功德而顯現相好莊嚴之身。應身，順應所化眾生之機性而顯現之身。《三千佛名經》記載，日面佛壽長一千八百歲，月面佛壽僅一日夜。馬祖道一禪師病重之際，借『日面佛，月面佛』之語回應問候，顯示斷絕壽命長短與生滅來去之相，傳為禪師生前最後之言。
