Condition
Both bowls are in overall good condition. The bowl on the left hand side of the catalogue illustration has a ca. 8cm wide area to the outside rim where the stone has been gently polished to both sides of a gentle dent in the rim with an associated hairline or vein running ca. 0.5cm into the side. There are two ca. 1cm wide shallow polished areas to the inside rim of the foot and another ca. 0,5cm wide polished area to the exterior rim around a tiny fritt. there are two natural veins running through the stone on one side of the bowl (just visible in the catalogue illustration).
The bowl illustrated on the right hand side of the catalogue illustration two natrual veins running through the stone on one side of the bowl.
The stone of both bowls is of slightly less white colour and more like mutton-fat than the catalogue illustration suggests. The natural veins and the scattered calcified spots to the centre of both bowls suggest that both bowls were made from the same piece of jade which is polished to a beautiful glossy finish.

In their simple and elegant form, and with their lustrous surface these two bowls illustrate the influence of porcelain shapes and monochrome glazes of the 18th century on other media such as jade. It is generally assumed that such fine jade bowls represented eating and drinking vessels of the highest quality and that their use was restricted to the highest levels of Qing society as decreed by sumptuary regulations. Further bowls of this type include an example illustrated in Later Chinese Jades. Ming Dynasty to Early Twentieth Century, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco, 2007, cat. no. 113. A pair of bowls of similar size, in the British Museum, London, is illustrated in Jessica Rawson, Chinese Jade from the Neolithic to the Qing, London, 1995, pl. 29:13.
