Condition

The figure is carved from one piece of wood. It is glued onto a later wood stand. The front of both feet are missing as are both arms and parts of the tied-up hair. There are overall losses to the wood, some vertical cracks, most notably a ca. 6cm long vertical c crack running from the base of the robe on the back upwards and a split to the rear side of his head and extending into the shoulder. There are traces of polychrome pigments adhering to the surface. Please note that this figure was included in the exhibition The Arts of the T'ang Dynasty 618-906, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1957, cat. no. 56, and illustrated in the catalogue, ibid., cat. no. 56. The results of a C14 (C 241907A-3) test of the wood from which the figure was carved shows a date of between 1444 and 1516 AD.
