This work is in good condition. There are hairline craquelure on the top left corner and bottom right edge, several light scratches along the bottom edge, and a minor abrasion on the bottom left corner and top right corner. Also there are scattered minor brown accretions on the general surface.

棒棰島是一個形似棒槌的小島，位在大連的大連灣與老虎灘灣之間。三面環山，一面濱海；島區北部群山環繞，蒼松翠柏；南面是開闊的海域和平坦的沙灘，是一個以山、海、島、灘為特色的風景勝地。該地的生成，有個美麗的傳說，相傳玉皇大帝的後花園裡有一株金棒棰花。這花餐道風，飲仙露，五千年開花，五千年結果。一天一陣清風吹來，把這果實吹落人間，化身為一位美麗的姑娘，人稱棒棰仙子。她感到人間的美好，歡快地歌唱：「白雲為路巧鋪成，天上奇種地上生。閱盡人間千般色，才知下界勝天庭。」玉皇大帝得知後，硬是把棒棰仙子追回了天庭。仙子懷著對人間美好的回憶，把自己心愛的頭針從空中投向人間，落在大海變成現在的這座小島。

著名的棒棰島國賓館就坐落在這裡，許多來大連視察的國家領導人和國内外貴賓都曾下榻於此，像是周恩來、劉少奇、葉劍英、以及後來的華國鋒、鄧小平、江澤民等人。

凃克的《棒棰島》便是從大連老虎灘灣遠眺該島，且在晴朗之日描繪出棒棰小島的景象。頗有「閱盡人間千般色，才知下界勝天庭」的絕美勝景。
