The works are in good condition. A: There is slight foxing across the surface of the work and small tears on the top right and bottom right corners. B: There are slight stains on the top edge and bottom right corner. There is foxing on the bottom right corner and two holes and light tears on the left near edge.

1940年開始至二次大戰後的1950年這段期間，常玉的生活特別清苦，也因此其1940年代的作品數量相當稀少，創作面貌較為模糊。六幅作品之一的《小鹿》於1941年完成，蜷伏在一片紅彩中的小鹿神情憂鬱卻又精緻唯美，藝術家特別在紙上題詞獻給馬格雷先生的夫人，使此作更彌足珍貴。《新年百福》、《新年賀卡：花瓶內的樹枝》、《新年賀卡：磁州窯瓶內的白蓮花》及《聖旦》四幅作品都是常玉特別贈送給馬格雷一家的聖誕及新年賀卡。《新年賀卡：花瓶內的樹枝》和《新年賀卡：磁州窯瓶內的白蓮花》這兩幅版畫為常玉於二次戰後所作，觀者可看出藝術家此時畫風轉變，賀卡上的花瓶和枝葉融入中國民間藝術的元素，構圖布局高雅大方。馬格雷小姐回憶，即使馬格雷先生後來搬離巴黎，常玉的來信和卡片從沒間斷過，這些信件和卡片在其父親去世後皆被她細心收藏，希望這次藉由蘇富比上拍常玉的作品，向世人展現藝術家在巴黎生活的點滴，更以此向其父親的老友常玉致敬。《五言詩》、《新年賀卡：磁州窯瓶內的白蓮花》、《新年百福》、《新年賀卡：花瓶內的樹枝》四件作品均於2004年居美亞洲藝術博物館舉辦的〈常玉 ─ 身體語言〉大展展出，再加上《聖旦》和《小鹿》，六件作品意義非凡，記錄了常玉和馬格雷先生超過三十餘年的友情和回憶，值得喜愛常玉的收藏家用心品味珍藏。
