常玉,這個如今在中國藝術市場家喻戶曉的名字,不僅作品屢於拍賣市場創出高價,甚至被尊稱為華人現代藝術大師;但因其個性狂放不羈,早年於巴黎拒絕畫商的栽培而錯失了揚名國際的機會,更因晚年孤獨不得志,最後以悲劇性的早逝結束了他傳奇的一生。此次蘇富比上拍的六件常玉作品,出自法國阿諾‧馬格雷(Arnaud de Maigret)先生舊藏,而馬格雷先生即是常玉於巴黎交往超過三十年以上的少數摯友之一。
馬格雷生於1911年,1992年逝世,生前為一名攝影師和記者,平常交友圈遍及藝文界;早年與美國旅法知名作家亨利‧米勒(Henry Miller) 友好並為其出版攝影集,也因和在巴黎十四區的常玉比鄰而居,1930年代兩人即結識。巴黎居美亞洲藝術博物館2004年舉辦的〈常玉 ─ 身體語言〉大展所使用的常玉與其作品《牧童與水牛》珍貴的合影,即為馬格雷所攝,足見證他與常玉的情誼。

馬格雷的女兒安娜 - 瑪莉‧馬格雷(Anne-Marie de Maigret) 回憶常玉和父親在世時,重情義的常玉過年過節總會寄送親手繪製的賀卡給她們一家。1953年安娜11歲時,父親亦曾帶她參觀常玉位於沙坑街的工作室。工作室寬敞但十分凌亂,充滿濃濃的波西米亞風情。好客的常玉為她親手烹調了中式湯麵,並示範如何煮食中國菜。工作室中滿滿的油彩及松節油的味道,和廚房內各式不同的四川辛辣醬料混合,使空氣中瀰漫著難以言喻的特殊氣味。這是安娜第一次,也是唯一一次和常玉的接觸,讓自小生長在瑞士,每天生活都有條不紊、循規蹈矩的她,留下了永不磨滅的印象,即使事隔多年,每當想起和常玉的邂逅,安娜總能回味再三。
創作於1959年,此次上拍的《五言詩》(Christmas )是一幅相當罕見的油彩鏡面畫。藝術家的鏡面畫數量極其稀少,目前已知的文獻記載不超過十五幅,這也讓《五言詩》更顯珍貴。常玉出身富裕之家,自幼練習四川大家趙熙的書法字體,其堅實的書法技巧讓他能在此小而精緻的鏡面上瀟灑揮毫。向來有著赤子之心的常玉在鏡面題上「月移花影洞,坑深糞落遲」這兩句看似毫不相干的五言詩句,雖然有點不登大雅之堂,但也看出藝術家在創作上不墨守成規和傲骨不屈的精神,也使觀者會心一笑。《五言詩》首句出自元代王實府《西廂記》中的「月移花影洞,疑是玉人來」,下句為明代馮夢龍《笑史》收錄的一首佚名《登廁詩》打油詩:「板側尿流急,坑深糞落遲」。常玉將兩詩句巧妙結合,作品背後亦特別題字獻給馬格雷先生,不只展現和其深厚的情誼,更顯示藝術家晚年雖然生活落魄,卻仍以戲謔幽默的態度看待人生,展現了他孤芳自賞的狂傲與才氣。(文續接下頁)
