出生於內蒙古的劉永剛，1982年於中央美術學院求學，師從靳尚誼，在學期間即嶄露藝術天分，曾以《北薩拉的牧羊女》獲首屆中國油畫展優等獎，後赴德國紐倫堡美術學院求學，現為中國美術學院教授。其作品由中國的商周青銅器與仰韶文化陶器中優美，強而有力的多樣線條表現擷取靈感，強調以色線來表達時代的精神面貌。近年屢屢於上海美術館與北京今日美術館舉辦大展，作品並為中國美術館、中國美術家協會、德國德意志聯邦銀行、日本直島美術館，香港東方藝術基金會等所收藏。
