This work is in very good condition. One can see scattered splittings across the surface of the sculpture due to the nature of the medium. There is evidence of minor restoration on top of the horse's head.

朱銘鄉土系列傑作
駿馬奔騰

朱銘15歲便向廟宇雕匠學習傳統木刻手藝，鍛鍊出紮實的基本功和精湛的刀法。在早期的創作題材上，受台灣當時高漲的鄉土運動思潮影響，他喜歡從民間傳說、草根生活、或是動物形象取材，開創了帶有濃厚的人情風土的「鄉土系列」。在此木雕作品，朱銘生動地刻畫了馬匹奔騰飛躍的動感及風馳電卷的速度感。木材是一種個性很強的材料，其本身的肌理紋路和形狀都不會無條件服從雕刻家的意願。朱銘透過他精準的刀法和自如的勁道，賦予馬匹一種凝聚的精氣神，一躍而起的形態自然而靈動。

朱銘的師傅楊英風曾讚揚道他：「能確切地在刀下表現木之光華，和自己生命的軌跡，除非他原本就具有這天賦，內心有這等需要，否則他不可能這麼完美的從工藝的圈子爬昇出來，亮就他自己的光華。」馬本是十二生肖中自強不息、一馬當先的代表，故經常出現在民間工藝品中。而朱銘以他對木質獨特的掌控能力，成功地整合民間傳統與藝術元素，構成寫實與寫意的兼容並蓄，流露出的真摯趣味實屬難得的藝術價值。
