Condition

There is a small nick to the tip of the toe on the toad's front right webbed foot and another small polished chip to the edge of his right hind-foot, but otherwise the carving is in good condition. The actual colour is consistent with the catalogue illustration.

A sage-green jade toad of similar size, from the collection of Gerald Godfrey and included in a number of exhibitions such as Chinese Jade. The Image from Within, Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena, 1986, cat. no. 228, was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th October 1995, lot 882. Another comparable pale-celadon jade toad carving was sold at Christie’s London, 21st October 1974, lot 78; and a white jade example, from the Edward T. Chow collection was included in the exhibition One Man’s Taste, Baur Foundation, Geneva, 1980, cat. no. J19.
