Condition
Apart from a few surface scratches and some typical age cracks, predominantly around the footrim, the overall condition is quite good. The actual patina is of a deeper reddish-brown tone, less orange compared to the catalogue illustration.

Compare a bamboo brushpot carved with an illustration of the Northern Song dynasty poet, Su Shi’s (1037-1101), visit to the Red Cliff, showing the poet with his two friends in a covered boat, and a section of the text from the Ode to the Red Cliff, sold at Christie’s New York, 19th September 2007, lot 33; another, from the Lutz collection, sold in our New York rooms, 18th March 2008, lot 49; and a further slightly larger example, carved with the same theme, sold in these rooms, 10th April 2006, lot 1643, from the collection of S.J.
