向京一九六八年出生於北京文藝世家,一九九五年畢業於中央美術學院雕塑系,同年舉辦首展,被稱為「天才」藝術家。一九九九年至二〇〇七年任上海師範大學美術學院雕塑工作室教師,二〇〇七年起與丈夫—— 藝術家瞿廣慈一起成立X+Q 雕塑工作室,現工作和生活於北京。
「通過身體說話」曾經是向京的個人標誌之一。在兩個系列——〈保持沉默〉(2003-2005)以及〈全裸〉(2006-2007)裡,向京一直在女性身體這個主體性線索上進行思考。一些重要的個人作品如《你的身體》(2005)、《敞開者》(2006)和《一百個人演奏你?還是一個人?》(2007)等等通過藝術家的幾個不同創作階段〈處女〉系列、〈身體〉系列以及〈全裸〉系列來宣告了這種語言的日臻成熟,包括對雕塑語言的實驗,以及在創作、布展時用空間和鏡像等多種語言來映射,最終反射出藝術家在女性本體之外探討超越「性別」,並用身體作為一個命題來說明某個群體和世界關系的探索。2011 年個展《這個世界會好嗎?》用〈雜技〉和〈動物〉兩個系列對「處境」和「人類命運」的話題提出追問,也開啟了向京藝術的全新面貌。
