Cette coupe s’inspire directement d’un modèle japonais créé par la manufacture de Sakaida Kakiemon à Arita. Il illustre une anecdote survenue au cours de l’enfance de Sima Guang (1009-1086) historien chinois de la période Song et que les Japonais nomment Shiba Onko. Il délivra un de ses amis tombé dans une jarre remplie d’eau en brisant celle-ci à l’aide de pierres.
Quatre jattes similaires, de même forme et même décor sont conservées au Rijksmuseum à Amsterdam et portent les numéros d’inventaire du Palais Japonais 35 et 153 Egalement numérotées n° 35, deux jattes sont conservées dans la collection David à Copenhague et une autre à Dresde ou encore au Victoria and Albert Museum à Londres (A. den Blaauwen, Meissen Porcelain in the Rijksmuseum, 2000, n°156-159).
