Fuad I, born in 1868, was the Sultan and later King of Egypt and Sudan. The ninth ruler of Egypt and Sudan from the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, he became Sultan of Egypt and Sudan in 1917, substituting the title of Sultan for King when the United Kingdom recognized Egyptian independence in 1922. Following his education at the military academy in Turin, Italy, Fuad served in a number of administrative posts, including nominal rector of the Egyptian University from 1908-1913 (now Cairo University). Furthermore, socially and religiously, Fuad aligned himself with the outlook and interests of Al-Azhar, Cairo’s great institution of Muslim learning, which won him popular support. Fuad I died on 28 April 1936 being a true watch connoisseur who was well known amongst the best watchmakers of the time who designed some exceptional and complicated pieces for him.
